Ok here are three concept art shots for my upcoming (lol) flash RPG game, which I’m callin “Nice Things” at the moment. Well actually one is a screen shot, and two of them are concept art.

Here’s the deal!

That top one is what the game currently looks like. I made the original prototype for the game in an hour at school, so I kind of went with an art style that was easy instead of looked cool. Over time I’ve tried to make it look cooler by adding colours and filters and stuff, but ULTIMATELY its a lazy art style - borne of haste and rush(e).

SO I GUESS I’VE GOT TWO ROUTES I CAN GO IN:

Pixel art, which I’m trying to stray away from because it’s my comfort zone - I’m quick at pixel art, and well practiced, but thats almost the exact reason I don’t wanna use it for this game. Because breaking boundaries yadda yadda whatever.

The other option is kind of more refined version of the original; same colours, same top-down angle, mostly similar proportions, just a bit of extra polish, and the complete removal of the fake-pixel look.

Ideally, that concept would also feature a lot more animations than the pixel art version - it would be hard work but hey if it looks better I’ll put in the HARD YARDS.

I’m still kind of mulling over which concept I like better, but I thought I’d post these just to show a little process

Or you know.

Whatever.

(catchphrase)

En Plein Air by Rick Silva

PK NOTE: UTTERLY ESSENTIAL project to follow for anyone interesting in contemporary technology and creativity …

Ongoing project involves artist creating digital works on his laptop on natural sites, using 3D software, glitches and animated GIFs - a very contemporary Impressionist. (There are some animated GIFs above, yet you may need to click on them to see them running).

From an interview at USED Magazine:

So, to start off tell us a little bit about yourself and your work

I’m a new media artist, my recent works explore landscape, remix and glitch. For my newest ongoing project enpleinair.org, I’m taking my laptop outside and seeing what I can create while reacting to the immediate terrain and elements.

En plein air, the french expression for in the open air, used in painting.. why did you choose to name it this?

Yes, it is a reference to that painting style. Taking a computer outdoors, using 3D software to create the images, and posting those images on a website is like an updated version of En plein air. Of course, making art outside has a history that goes back thousands of years, but the term En plein air has some specific connotations that I like. One is that it is often associated with the Impressionist painters, and a common technique of theirs was to work with the materiality of paint, to let it smear and pile up so that it looks simultaneously like a summer landscape and globs of paint. On enpleinair.org I let the digital processes show by including the rendering artifacts and polygon glitches.

Highly recommend checking out the project site here

Your code doesn’t work because you have recursive inheritance.

pinkSprite extends spriteMovement extends hitTest which creates a new pinkSprite in it’s constructor.

spriteMovement should only extend Sprite or MovieClip.

moadh:

These bars cover 4567000000 years

For reference, here is what they look like without using a log scale:

And the final product:
